Zero Emission Luminaire with General Designs Constructed from a variety of salvaged materials the prototype street lights have been created for Blackpool Council's Festival of Light 2005. Donkey Dung and kitchen waste are placed in the tanks at the base of the lights ferment to create methane gas. Stored in a series of balloons the gas is eventually burnt off in the lantern above. Individual units are displaceable, repairable and upgradeable. The project introduces a new urban infra-structure which encourages public involvement in its upkeep, maintenance, care and construction. Many contemporary urban regeneration projects involve the demolition and re-building at large scale of parts of cities that have fallen into disrepute due to economic or social changes. This practice is unsustainable because it displaces existing communities and local businesses. The Zero Emission Luminaire is one of the prototypes investigating a new aproach to urban design based on the disposal of a number of catalyst elements. These carefully designed elements, placed in strategic locations will engage and empower local residents to contribute towards wider urban regeneration.
