Sitt Mary Rose dirctor: Anna Malunat, costumes: Mona Ulrich, music: Simon Camatta, FFT Duesseldorf & Theater Oberhausen, 2009

Premiere of dramatic adaptation of Etnel Adnam's novel by Anna Malunat and Hannah Schwegeler at FFT Duesseldorf, Germany on 31. October 2009. Sitt Mary rose is set during the 1970s in Beirut where social inequalities are brewing a civil war. Sitt Mary Rose is caught between the factions because she supports the weakest victims of the conflict. The drama ends with a cross examination where Sitt Mary Rose is sentenced by her childhood playmates and her teen lover.

The stage set initially addresses the question how to express the fragile Middle Eastern situation visually. This question is addresse metaphoricaly through a material. A surface is formed from 240mm x 240mm white plaster tiles. The underside of the tiles is hollow. Step by step the weight of the actors fractures the tiles which are transformed into Etnel Adnan's description of Beirut during the war, a landscape of dust and rubble.
