Opernreigen opera by S. Banihashemi, H. Eimermacher, E. Harnik & Y. Ueda, director: Anna Malunat, costumes: Magdolna Parditka, Oper Graz, 2007

Opernreigen discusses the visibility of sounds. Does a sound remain in the room after its initial resonance has faded away? The stage room is simultaneously a sound studio and a construction site where an opera house is to be constructed. Sounds are collected and conserved so that they can later be released into the new opera house. Criss-crossing the room are magnetic tapes which are linked to a series of horns connected to recording machines. A large number of employees is busy on site, singers who provide sounds against pay, a conductor who disciplines his musicians and a team of specialists who collect and conserve the sound waves. All employees are caught in a network of social relations experiencing the ups and downs of a typical day at work - and hence almost an Opera.
