La Boheme Screenplay by Aki Kurasmäki, director: Anna Malunat, Staatstheater Mainz, 2007

The Bohemians were often children from well-off families who chose a romatic life as artists in Parisian street corner cafes, attic flats and bars over the comfort of the middle classes. Always on the run from the bailiffs many of the bohemians did not have a permanent residence and died young from diseases festering in hardship. Stage design and costumes are mere suggestions of spaces and conditions and are only defined through use by the characters on stage. To enagage the audience to fill in the voids, the Bohemians in our production reside in a transient environment of changing sounds and light and transforming furniture suggesting but never imposing the different settings of the screenplay.
